Caledonia, MI — A woman is in critical condition Monday after a house exploded in Caledonia.
The fire was called in just after midnight Monday near the corner of 76th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue.
Fire crews from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene with the Cutlerville Fire Department. The woman was trapped on the back porch of the home, and firefighters were unable to reach her.
Body-worn cameras show the moments leading up to her rescue.
Investigators believe the explosion was possibly gas-fueled, but not necessarily a leak. Officials say debris was found as far as 100 feet from the home due to the force of the explosion.
DTE, who responded to the incident along with fire crews, released a statement about the explosion:
DTE Energy was called to the scene of an incident in Caledonia early Monday morning. The cause of the incident is unknown at this time, and we are working with local authorities to investigate.
Safety is our top priority. Our crews arrived early Monday and immediately disconnected natural gas service to the home to ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
We understand a woman who was in the home has been transported to a local hospital, and our thoughts and prayers go to her and her loved ones in hopes for the best possible outcome.
Our teams focus on maintaining the safety and integrity of our system of underground natural gas pipes through a robust program of inspections, maintenance and upgrades. While the scene was cleared early Monday morning, the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. The woman remains in critical condition.
